A few tips for keeping your pets safe during the Winter!

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened…Anatole France

The winter can be a tricky time for our pets even in the milder climate in the Carolinas. The beginning of the year is an optimal time to take your fur babies in for a pet wellness exam. Twice-yearly exams especially for more senior pets will help you to insure your cat or dog is healthy before the weather gets too cold.

Once your four-legged family member has a clean bill of health you can work to keep them safe during the winter months. Even though a sweater or jacket might embarrass your dog, it can really make a huge difference in their level of comfort on a cooler night, especially if they have shorter hair.

There are many unique home décor options for you and for your pets comfort indoors, www.walmart.com/ip/Merry-Products-2-in-1-Configurable-Pet-Crate-and-Gate & www.hayneedle.com/ are just a few places you might find some quality “rooms” for your little friend. It is always a good idea to make sure they have a dry and protected space to sit or lie down in but not so big that they lose body heat. Keep their bed clean and dry and be sure there is no draft to cause them discomfort.

This is also a great time to check that your sweet friend has a current tag and that you use a leash when outdoors. Snow and ice make tracking more difficult for a dog and then can easily become disoriented when it accumulates.

When your favorite family member comes back into the house from a romp outdoors, it’s a good idea to wipe down their legs, paws and feet to remove any chemicals or items they might track into your home. Snowmelt and salt along with other chemicals used in the winter can be deadly if consumed but can also irritate your pets paws so be sure to have a good awareness of where they are going and what’s in their path. This will also help you to identify any dry spots, cuts or chaffing that might occur as they don’t have the option for lotion that people often use more of in the winter.
